Classification Methods… tax or folk?

Folksonomy is the categorisation of information made by the public using a tag-system. It is a loosely-structured form of classification. By simply hashtagging a post you are using folksonomy. Each hashtag classfies the post into more groups.

Taxonomy is the opposite, it categorizes using the hierarchical method of classification. It is the formal of classification. This is done by breaking information into an organized list, usually primary and seconadry information.

The experiment: I put these two methods to the test and conducted my own experiment. First, I created an outline of the ideas that were covered in my engish coarse. These ideas were broken into primary and secondary categories, this is an example of taxonomy.

Second, I made a word cloud from a discussion board post I wrote previously. The result was very different. The cloud did not really follow a structured organizational pattern!

My opinion is that although folksonomy is more natural it is less useful in comparison to taxonomy. Philosophically, I prefer taxonomy because it helps me make sense of my information.

The Untold Stories Behind Maps

Hello, my name is Danielle Bastian! English 212 for me is simply a required course but I believe it is beneficial to my overall success. I am a nursing major so this class will help immensely due to the fact that we have to write so many papers in the program. I personally love to travel and so the content of maps connects well with my interests. Through blogging, I hope to develop a stronger sense of voice and style. Blogging is a new way of writing for me and it pushes me out of my comfort zone!

“A map can tell a story”, I connect this to the saying “a picture can tell 1000 words”. By simply looking at a map we create meaning and ideas associated with the particular location. A map is a narrative to a place, it tells you about the location. Mapping and the idea of mapping have completely changed for me since this class. I never realized how many rhetoric aspects go into or can be drawn from a simple map. Rhetoric is at work in the creation of a map through ethos. The author’s personal experience and perception change the map. Pathos would be how each community is represented on the map, are they designed to seem powerful or hidden to show irrelevance. Logos would be the final product, is the image full of symbols to hide or distract from the truth or is it very detailed and accurate? There are many things to consider when viewing a map!

PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY

Psychogeography is essentially drifting, walking wherever you want and recording your thoughts while doing so. Psychogeography is significant because it destroys the boundary between art and life. It allows you to regain touch with the true meanings of your surroundings. My route follows the shape of the letter “F” and is on campus.

As I began my walk I could not help but notice how crisp the air was. It was about twenty-something degrees and snowing. The snow was mixing with slush and it was slippery so I had to pay attention to where I was walking. This led me to notice how green the grass was in contrast to the pure white snow. The snowflakes were absolutely enormous and it looked like the world was one big snow globe. This made me feel calm, I was able to step back and notice the big picture of my surroundings. I passed a lot of people who were typically in their own world, I thought about how it connected to this assignment. The last stretch of Collings Dr. is very unpopulated. I found a sense of peace in the open fields with some trees scattered. I connected this part of the walk with being home and how I used to “drift” as a child. As I walked by a parking lot I noticed how colorful the different vehicles were. They popped even more against the white snow cover. Overall, I saw campus as a completely different place. I want to incorporate these types of walks more often because it was a sort of meditation that I did not know I needed.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
